There is a tiny hairline crack about an inch long in the casing of my Golf (manual) gearbox, as a result of damage done by myself..! Other than that, the box itself is fine. I've cleaned up the damaged area and put a few layers of instant metal over the cracked area..does anyone know if there's anything I can add to the gear oil, like a stop-leak, as an added precaution against further leaking..?
Any help would be greatly appreciated...

the only proper cure is to have it tig welded, preferably when in pieces and chemically cleaned.
What's the heat rating of the chemical metal? If it fails I would use JB Weld and with it being a gearbox there really shouldn't be much more bother with it leaking for a while.
JB Weld would make an excellent repair but I think it would be important to drill holes about 3/16" or so at both ends of the crack before attempting the repair. If you don't there is very real danger of the crack lengthening.

Surely there's no pressure involved, so it's just a question of preventing the crack from getting worse and then stopping the leak. Drilling holes at each end of the crack should stop it growing as someone suggested, then how about just fixing a plate over the top, with an O ring or something sandwiched in between? The swarf from the drilling would be the greatest worry that I can see.
