I was reading about Mazdas a few days ago and they used the Wankel type of engine for a while.



I wonder, do they continue to do so?



Is the Wankel a lot different to work on from the standard reciprocating piston type?



Would i have fun if I bought and maintained an old Wankel'd Mazda?

It stands to reason there has to be some reason why very few cars are produced with that type of engine.

I just wonder how thirsty?

Big problem is lack of compression compared to a piston engine. I believe that a diesel version was made (by Rolls Royce) but it involve a double rotor system (shaped like a cottage loaf) to precompress the air.

Overall, I think the high surface area to "swept volume" ratio and the relatively poor compression ratios achievable means that a Wankel engine will never be as efficient in terms of fuel consumed to BHP generated.

The quasiturbine (qurbine) engine is now in its prototype stage, and has already been demonstrated in a go-cart (2004). It is an improvement on the rotary engine: higher output (30%), complete combustion of fuel (many different types of fuels can be used including hydrogen, and no exhaust pollution) and can be adopted to drive many varieties of machinery (can even be miniaturized to drive a power hand tool). This is the future.

Ha! I wonder how many engine designers have thought that in the past? ;-)

Not saying it won't be but a heck of a lot of promising designs have fallen by the wayside over the years.

They're not quite as bad as that at all, which is why mazda continue(d) to use them. And mazda being mazda, make them pretty good.

We were somewhere around Barstow, on the edge of the desert, when the drugs began to take hold. I remember "Lin Chung" saying something like:

Very thirsty. I think car magazine has a comparison this month. No its Auto Express and they compare it with an AudiTT turbo which managed 28mpg on test compared to the Mazda's 18
