MK3 Golf starting problems

Afternoon all

I need some advise which is nothing new as my Mk3 Golf has developed a bit of a problem. The car was given a 20k mile service 2 months ago (points, plugs, oil and timing etc etc) and all has been fine, in fact it has been running better than ever until this morning....

I went to start the car in the garage and it refused to fire first time, so i tried again and it fired up but would idle erratically around 400rpm where as it would normally idle at a constant 800rpm. I compensated this by increasing the gas and thus increasing the revs, and once it hit 800rpm it would run 100% fine. It almost feels like the timing is out but as mentioned it was serviced some 8-10 weeks ago with the timing being done at the same time (after a local garage f@cked the time up when they did the cambelt )

I have a couple of thoughts as to what it could be, but being a weekend tinkier i want to make sure that i haven't missed anything.

Fuel filter? (replaced at time of service) Mass Air sensor (what can i use to clean this) Idle control Valve (where is it and what can i use to clean it)

Please help me guys i would like to get the car sorted before the weekend with out clearing having to remorgage the house.

Cheers all

Antony
