It didn't smooth the paint. It removed stuff on the paint. The paint still has the same swirls and marks it had before, just none of this weird automotive acne.
It is really odd stuff. You should try some if you find the car gets the odd 'flecked' roughness my cars had, and I think you'll see why I don't think it is 'cutting' the clearcoat.
