Mondeo Speedometer

Hi all,

I wonder if somebody out there can offer me some advice. I was driving my mark II Mondeo and the speedo suddenly died on me. The rest of the instruments are working fine. I've got a manual for the mark I Mondeo which explains that the cable at the back of the speedo can be reached from under the bonnet. Well, it can't.

Does the whole cluster need to be removed from inside to get at it? Also, are there any other possible causes before I attempt this? Is there anything I need to know in advance?

Thanks

Mondeo's from 96 onwards used electronic speedos. You won't have a speedo cable on a MkII. The vehicle speed sensor has possibly failed. Do you have any issues with the engine stalling at idle or on the overrun?

If not, check fuses. If all is OK, the dial has probably failed.

Thanks for the swift response.

It's a '97 diesel and the engine is running as normally as it ever has. I've had the car for 5 years now and the fuel guage has always worked back to front, would that be connected? Anyway, is the speed sensor on the gearbox and what side would it be if I'm standing at the front bumper?

I shall check the fuses tomorrow in the daylight.

I can see this being a very costly time consuming exercise!

LOL Possibly!

Yes. It's on the gearbox which is at the right hand side of the engine bay (battery / fusebox side).

I used to have a Mk II Mondeo.

The speedo would intermittently stop working.

One day, on the way home from work the engine conked out, and would not restart.

Turns out I'd run out of fuel, - even though the fuel gauge said I had half a tank.

- i.e. the speedo and fuel gauge are linked together.

I ended up taking the car to a ford dealer, who replaced the speedo, which fixed both problems.

And yes, it does involve taking the instrument cluster out, - but there are many screws holding it in place - it's pretty easy.

Looks like it'll probably be a new speedo then. Thanks for all the advice.

The vehicle speed sensor on the focus is not unknown to have problems. Speedo bounces to zero for a while and then returns to normal and engine gets a bit juddery since the ecu requires input from vss to manage properly. Check out messages with VSS or vehicle speed sensor in alt.autos.ford.focus for more. 85euros to have mine changed.

Of course the mondeo may not see the same issues but it may be checking before rippin the dash out.
