they can only fail/pass things per the MOT testers manual, so if you feel it should/nt have passed, appeal the descision.

slight crack should be ok in the front number plate, hard to say without looking at the screen, got a picture ?

If I take it to the free testing station and they fail me on things. If I take it to my local garage would they see that it has been tested elsewhere and what was failed?

if we have the original failure test certificate number or the v5 log book number, we can print of copies of failures, advises ect that have been done elsewhere, for our own testing station all we need is the reg number if we did the original test.

what i was saying I think that maybe the main dealer MOT test may be more strict than my local garage (no evidence of this) and might fail on things that are based on judgement more so like number plate and my windscreen........

so i was asking if they did fail - can i take it to my local garage and pay for an MOT.

Will they know that it was already MOTed at the main dealer?

it wont be any stricter, the mot test *should* be the same across the board, for a main dealer as much as it is for an independent mot garage.

if they did fail it yes you can take it to another testing station for another mot, you can take it to as many as you like, if what you are trying to do is get a pass certificate by going from station to station without doing any work, its your money.

its gonner cost you bugger all so stick it in and see what happens.

If it's going to fail on minor things you may as well take the free mot and put the money to fixing the trivial things. If it's the windscreen then that can be replaced through insurance for about £50 excess without affecting ncb. Or ask the tester before booking the mot if they could kindly have a quick look at the windscreen and give his opinion.

They both have to justify fails based on the exact same criteria.

The 'screen is judged by tangible criteria with specific measurements - there's no room for judgement calls. The number plate can only fail if the crack renders a character "missing or incomplete". Did you look at the links to motuk.co.uk that were posted earlier in the thread?

The computerised test holds all the info on a database, since anyone can access that info (if they know the details needed) then I am fairly sure it will show up as soon as the second place plugs in the details, all the fail reasons will come up and all the advisories, so at least they will have a list to start off with, they can then spend more time on the rest !!

have a look at motinfo.gov.uk you can check the mot status and advisories there. My car had advisories for low brake pads last year, the info is still there, when I go for its next test I will see if last years advisories are flagged up for the tester

all info stays on the system for 5 years.

Interesting that the car I took in yesterday had advisories for deteriorated tie-rod bushes last year, these have not been touched but weren't mentioned this year.

Whether that's changed with the new system I don't know.

Regardless of which, he still has an MOT which is current, can be used to tax the vehicle (I have actaully taxed a car, at a VLO, with an MOT due to run out the next day, without comment!), and can still legally be driven on the road.

Whenever possible I get my cars MOT'd before the due date, then, should it fail, it's still legal while I get it fixed.

It wasn't roadworthy before the MOT either but the MOT was still valid.

That's what I wasn't sure about. Disregarding the roadworthiness (after all a car could fail on a cracked number plate) would it now be flagged as having no valid Mot if zapped on the police number plate recognition system? Not that it matters in this case as the car has been left at the garage.

The road tax runs out at the end of July and we did tax it yesterday online and DVLA database confirmed the Insurance & MoT were valid. Would the systyem have still accepted the Mot if we had left it until today after the fail had been registered?

So the new MOT "fail" doesn't supercede the old cert ?
