MOT - Cambridge/Newmarket area

Anyone know anywhere doing this for less than the money grabbing 41 quid demanding by the ministry?

Thanks Dan

Off hand no, I always use Archdeacon anyway as they tend to tell you what hasn't failed but needs dealing with. And they've never passed anything I've had anything to do with that's had bit's of the structure collapsing under the weight of the rust (unlike Marshalls)

It's the trade that lobby for price increases - not the government. And the price has to be based on a small garage in perhaps a rural area that can't line them up nose to tail. The equipment needed ain't cheap, and I don't think the cost is really that high - if the job's done properly.

No sure - but when you add up all that motoring costs you - this 40.75 is taking the piss a bit. Especially when you look at what they charge in other countries. Spain for example is 16 euros.

Ho hum, I'll get to it after christmas.

Cheers Dan.

Half price at National Tyre Services. Last September I had an MOT and a oil/filter change (semi-synthetic) for a total of £36. Nice people as well - no sharp selling like Kwik-Fit-U-Up - just some good advice on possible future problems.

Nonsense. The garage need to charge a reasonable amount - they aren't a charity. MOT equipment is expensive to buy and maintain, and MOT testers need paying.

How much does a loaf of bread cost in Spain? How much does a Spanish 'MOT' tester get paid?

I get really sick of this argument. So many Brits want to pay Spanish prices for goods and services, while they continue to earn British salaries.

Here here mate, I agree. the British public think that they are the most hard done by in the world.

Trouble is the nearest National is not in Cambridge :( They don't do MOT's there.

No I appreciate this - but since the average MOT takes 20 minutes - that's 3+ an hour (more if you are a dodgy outfit) - and it's not a regulated system (as Dave Plowman pointed out - some places will pass anything as long as they get their money) (expecting attacking over this - but it isnt' - be fair - unless the state runs it and it's totally impartial.....)

Actually - I worked for a multination - and the salaries for my job were better in spain than they were in the UK - so that statement is not always true.

I'm not saying I want cheap wine/beer/bread here - I want a fair price for a fair service. It's one thing to have a cheap MOT - it's another to know that the garage are reputable and won't find a 1000 things wrong with your car that's actually putting more money in their pockets.

I'll get it sorted, but thanks for the comments.

Cheers Dan.

I've never seen an MOT done in 20 minutes - my local place takes

45 minutes.

Check the place Dave Plowman mentioned :-| I've heard the same that he reports from many sources - just a quick once over and paperwork done.

Ho hum.

Cheer sDan.

45 Mins? I've never had one done that quick. I usually wait while it is done. 20 mins sounds about right.

Well, I always wait (and watch) too.

Both my current place (KND motors, Bideford) and my previous place (Southampton Tyre and Rubber) take at least 45mins.

I didn't mention one. ;-)

Have you ever seen the condition of most cars in Spain?

Spanish MOT...

"Yep, it's a car alright".

Yes I have. Having been there at the last one on my dad's car I was quite suprised. It's quite a thorough inspection of all the vital parts of the car (as much is covered out there as is here) and then you are given a certificate and a sticker to put in the window to prove that you have an MOT (insurance is invalid without this I understand). They are state run - and won't even suggest a garage if you ask as to be totally impartial - but will tell you if anything needs doing.

I was most impressed to be honest.

Cheers Dan.

I was told they tightend up the inspection no-end because of all the junks still on the road. I understand it's a 6 month inspection as well.
