No it would not. My car had one of the drums gripping on my last mot. It felt perfectly ok to drive and pulled up straight under fairly heavy braking. I don't drive it from one week to the next and knew a few hundred miles would have sorted it out, but it was done as part of the work. The repair garage just took the drum off cleaned it up and adjusted and MOT man was happy. Felt identicle to me when driven, but nice to know the problem has been sorted properly.

If a testing station *chooses* to give a free re-test for brakes, or anything else, of course they are entitled to. However, there is a list of items for which no retest fee *can* be charged.

In this area at least, since the introduction of computerised tests, nowhere does free re-tests for those items for which they are allowed to charge.

In the last year I've had MOT's in South London and East Anglia and there is no question about the retest. It's free. I'd walk in protest if it wasn't. Try Queens motors in Penge SE20. While you wait (just join the queue), about £50 and free retest if brought back within 14 days. I have about 4 local-ish garages where I live in East Anglia and I don't even ask about the retest. They all do it around here.

Google my arse. Go out in the real world and ask anywhere that does an mot. I've never found one of the independent small garages that try to charge for a retest. I can't speak for kwik fit type places or large dealerships as wouldn't go within a light year of them.

Not only are you wrong about free re-tests (see other post), but you are very out of date with regard to the timescale for re-tests. It all changed in 2006!

Long story short:

If the testing garage repairs it within *10* days, the re-test will be free.

If you take it away to repair it, and it has failed on a limited list of items, provided it is returned by the end of the next working day the re- test is free.

If neither of the above apply, provided it is resubmitted within 10 working days, only half the fee is payable.

Under all other situations, a full test fee will have to be paid.

Well last oct I took my car away for rear brakes, handbrake and welding tosills on both side.Not problem with the free retest just short of 14 days later. Could it be different rules as its an 18 year old car?

Well I can only say it as I find it. My two MOT's last year were not as you find it and both had the free retest option. I wouldn't get a test from someone who didn't offer it. Most sensible people wouldn't .

In the "real world" of East Berks, there are very few garages that do free re-tests that are not required to be free. I have three independents within walking distance of where I live, and not one of them have done it since computerisation.

As they have every right to do. But not an obligation to do. There is a difference.

Of course I never go to an MOT tester who does repairs. So has to be taken away. Always managed to find small mot testers where ever I've lived that just do MOT's. Used to go to place in New Cross London, then a small place in Kent and now a place near Cambridge, but plenty of them about.

You can get a car from the scrappies and put a certificate on if you know the right place. How does she know it ever saw a test station the second time aronud?

No. The garage merely chose to do it for free but it's not on the list of free retest items so they could've charged.
