New discs and pads on Focus.

At what sort of mileage do these problems begin to emerge? I have 33,500 on mine at the moment, and if I'm potentially going to have problems later on then this affects my trade in/sell/change the car dilemma. Which is a shame, cos I love the car and think its a damn fine combination of chassis and engine.

How many miles do you reckon one should last? I've jet to have one wear out on me, although I know they can get pitted if they are not used for a while and get rusty.

I didnt wish to alarm anyone, this info came only from two welsh police forces who have several dead TDCi's all with 100k or slightly more on the clocks. These are all mehanical failures. They were all driven constantly very hard, so are going to show up slight weaknesses. The timing belt and charge pump problems are quite rare at the moment, but failure the latter usually begins with a reluctance to start usually hot, when there are no fault codes presented- it just cant produce enough pressure at cranking speeds as the internal vanes break up.

I've never replaced a disc on a car of mine. Replaced plenty on others...but I don't use the brakes much.

I had a new pair put on my Mondeo at 90k, so that's 45k/pair. I don't use the brakes that much though. Town driving may mean you need discs sooner.

One my focus (T reg - 1.6) I had to replace the pads (for the first time) at about 60k. When I checked the discs where a smidgen under the limit as well so they got swapped at the same time.

Disks and pads came in at under 60 quid for the lot (ferrodo pads, halfrauds discs - was going on holiday the next day and there was not a lot of choice on a Sat afternoon!). Changed the lot in 45mins. Not difficult if you have the (minimal) tools.

I've had two Xantias and the electrics have been spot on.

The hydraulics though are a different story...

Xantias have complex hydraulics, and need TLC, they don't thrive on abuse.
