Nissan Primera

A friend of mine has bought an "N" reg " 2 litre one. The coolant level remains constant and the temp gauge stays in the middle. He is concerned that even on short trips the fan comes on. Is this normal ? TIA Ian

Does it have aircon? This starts one of the fans on my car, regardless of engine temperature.

"> At low speed yes

He told me three or four mile trips which I take to mean just nipping into town ie. up to 30mph

My L reg (no aircon) and P reg (with aircon) 2.0 Primeras have never had the fan come on on such a short trip.

Nor does it on my 2.0GT (with air con). In fact, I've never noticed it running at all unless it has been standing still for more than a few minutes, regardless of the time of year. Has it had a recent coolant change? Perhaps the radiator is showing it's age a little (losing fins etc) and is therefore not cooling as well as it should?

nor does it on my 1.6 Primera

That's the sort of trip where you'd expect it to switch on intermittently.

He bought it at an auction and apparently it has had a new radiator fitted but not (he thinks) a Nissan one. Will the fan negate any problems ? As stated the temp gauge stays in the middle.

Sounds like someone has stuck a piece of wire across the temp sensor so the fan is always on. A common quick fix if the temp sensor fails.
