Peugeot 307 temp gauge

I have a 3 year old 307 HDi and the temp gauge has started to jump suddenly into the red zone (with associated flashing lights and annoying beeping noises) and then go straight back down to normal. Sometimes it stays in the red until you turn the ignition off and on. This can happen after a few yards from stone cold and can go away for days at a time. Coolant level is fine.

Is this a known problem with the 307?

TIA

Firstly try the latest software from the dealer. (£35) There were many, many bugs with early 307's; you probably have an out of sync milometer / odometer too which the update will fix.. (you may not have noticed!)

If that doesnt work, then start examining the engine bay wiring to the temp sensor. On some HDi, especially if its ever suffered leaky fuel lines on the wiring, the connectors and insultation was dire- check this.
