No Brakes

I got a bit of a fright a while ago when I put my foot on the brake and nothing happened. A few pumps of the pedal brought them back to life. For the next week there was a squeak on breaking and a light smell of burning brake oil. This was all a couple of months ago. I have not found any signs of a leak and the reservoir level is not falling.

I'm pretty sure a problem like this will not fix itself. Any ideas please?

Sounds to me like you've just fixed an airlock in your brake hydraulics. Don't see why you should have spilled any fluid though.

Is it a Renault by any chance??

Check the pads and linings for signs of a fluid leak, and get it fixed. (and replace the pads or linings as appropriate.)

If no joy - or even if there is - get the brake fluid replaced - if it's more than 2 years old may have absorbed water, which will turn to vapour when hot and then hey presto! - no brakes.

No, it's a Cavalier. It's also at the age where you expect a few problems.
