Saturday started out nice so I took off a couple of wheels from the pug.=20 Everything looked OK and there was a reasonable amount of stopping stuff=20 left on the pads.=20
I lifted it up the rest of the way onto the bigger axle stands and then=20 put some of our neighbour's under it too. Then I cabled it to the towing=20 eye of a MkII Land Rover that lives over the way from us (with=20 permission). In the air and nice and stable I played with the brakes.=20 The nearside disk was warped by less than 1mm. I swapped it onto the=20 other side and confirmed it was the disk and not a bearing fault or=20 worse. As this was the first time I'd ever had the wheels off a pug it=20 took a little while to get to the point where the calipers swung out but=20 the layout is pretty easy.
I grabbed SWMBO car and bought new pads and disks. Putting them in was=20 about as straightforward a job as you could hope for. I think I spent=20 more time making sure things were safe than I spent replacing bits.=20 While I had the wheeels off and was working on the calipers anyway I=20 thought it prudent to loosen up the bleed valves and shove lots of new=20 brake fluid in there so some time was spent pumping the pedal and=20 refreshing the checking the resevoir level.=20
Some testing on the driveway everything seemed fine. Some slow tests in=20 our cul-de-sac everything seemed fine. Some faster testing in our cul- de-sac with the likely end result of failure meaning I'd end up in our=20 garden wall were sucessful so I took it slowly round to the big company=20 carpark I have permission to use.=20
45-0 on maximum braking, cadencing when locking on 10 tests or so=20 assured me that I'd probably worn off the manufacture coating. On the=20 plus side there was no rattle, grumble or vibration.=20
I drove the pug to work and back today and deliberately braked harder=20 than I would normally when approaching junctions. Everything was smooth=20 and rattle free.=20
The car isn't worth very much. Spending a whole =A340 isn't an=20 insignificant percentage of what I paid but some things are important=20 and when I bought a sub =A3500 car I expected to spend some more of the=20 =A31000 budget I set making it right.
