Noisy back end on '08 Mazda 5

I'm getting some weird noises from the back of my Mazda 5, a rumbling & rattling sound when I go over bumps. The weird thing is the noise gets worse the further I have driven, heat related? I dropped it into the tyre place near where I work & the guy had a good look underneath. All he found was the dust cover had slipped off a shock. Everything else he said was OK, no bushings split etc.

Getting really annoyed I put my phone in the boot on a towel to cushion it & made a recording, it came out well with no engine noise. This is exactly how it sounds when I'm driving. This is driving at around 15mph over 4 speed bumps, the noises are post bump.

One other thing I've noticed is that the back end seems to do a sideways shift sometimes after a pretty bad bump in the road.

Any ideas folks?

Cheers

This says sloppy bushes to me. A quick google shows it to be a reasonably sophisticated multi-link subframe, shared with all the other Ford C1- platform stuff, including Mk2 Focus, so almost anywhere should have experience.

Shock absorber. Took it to a tyre place near work and the guy had a good look underneath and found nothing. Drove out at a reasonable pace and he saw that oh, yes it is bouncing all over the place. Price for dampers and rear disks was about the same as the franchised dealer, who was booked up for a fortnight. Local mechanic did it for half the price. Check the front bushes as well.

(not a 5, but the same platform).

Cheers, I've got it booked into a local garage on Monday. He mentioned ARB links when I described the symptoms. Will report back.

Jumping one way can be one rear shock absorber duff, find some speed humps and go over with one sides wheels on the level, the other side over the hump, note response, repeat with opposite wheels going over the hump, compare responses.

Garage has reported back, OS ARB link bar shot, likewise with the shock too, that was indeed the sideways jump.

£93 all in, seems reasonable, probably an hours labour.
