Front end clunking over bumps

Saab: '86 900 hatchback, 84k miles (mostly low speed, short trips)

I've got a noticible clunk comming from the front end going over moderate bumps. It used to occur only when going over bumps while turning, and the noise was more metalic. Now going straight there is a noise and it is a more solid thump. I thought the first was due to warn shock bushings, now I am wondering if the new sound is the same problem getting worse or a new one (motor mounts?). How can I tell (where to look and what to look for) or should I get it checked. What ever the source, is it ok to continue driving (again for short trips at low speeds.)

Thanks

Could be one of so many things.

I'd start off by jacking up the front and carefully inspecting the suspension and steering, especially the rack mounts and the (4) balljoints. If you're not sure what this involves, either ask or take it to someone who knows saabs.

Check the shocks and their rubber bushes. Any movement? Cracks in the bushes?

Check the brakes. Are the pads correctly seated? Are the calipers firmly mounted?

Then check the engine mounts. I don't think they're your problem, since you (should, 86) have solid mounts. But check them anyway. Visually inspect them, then check how much the engine moves under load.

Let us know what you find.
