Hi,
I have been told the reason my tailgate on my Forester creaks is that the top hinges need adjusting.
Does anyone know the correct procedure for this ??
I have already lubed the latches on either side and this has removed the squeaks but not the creaking.

Anyone ever figure out how to fix this? I have the same problem in a 97IW.

Another issue with the rear hatch on the Foresters is the small cone type rubber bumpers on either side of the hatch door, which contact the body of the car when closed. These need to have a small dab of silicone grease applied periodically to allow them to slip minimally without squeaking (or creaking?) In any case, we had troubles with both of our Foresters but this seemed to eliminate the problem quite well and lasts longer than one might think. Your dealer surely must be aware of this "fix."
I'll add to my own post here by quoting another post from the group some time ago. Some other things to try:
HATCH AREA KNOCKING SOUNDS: The hatches are a pain to maintain. Do have the dealer adjust it for you now, since it is under warranty. You also have to clean and lube the side "sliders" periodically or you will get terrible sounds in back. Here's the drill: take apart the slider, spring, and thin plate (yes, there's one there!) that's under the slider. Clean everything with WD 40. Lube everything with white lithium grease. Reassemble. This is especially important in the summer if you live in dusty conditions. Dirt clings to these latches like a magnet, causing the terrible noises mentioned above.

Our Foresters did the same thing. I pushed the little metal tab in so the spring would clear the gray plastic buffer thing. Then greased them with waterproof grease . Quiet since last fall. Richard
When I first got my car, I had a very annoying rattling coming from the rear hatch whenever I hit bumps. It turned out to be the lock mechanism in the hatch. The metal bars that extend from the lock (out towards the passenger side of the car) were not secured properly and were rattling around. The dealer just put in some additional insulation into that area to keep them from moving and now it's gone. Hope this is what the problem is cuz it's a very easy fix. This may sound stupid, but also check that everything in your spare tire area is secured
Just spray some lube (WD-40, Tri-Flow, etc.) on the little spring-loaded black tabs found on either side of the opened rear hatch. It fixed my problem in a matter of seconds. You may have to repeat the task every month or so, but it's easier and quicker than filling up the gas tank.
