Non-Starting Nissan

Just been talking to someone who's car won't start. It's an N plate Nissan something or other, with a V6.

Apparently it's been getting harder and harder to start, to the point where it now pretty much won't. Various garages have looked at it and found nothing wrong, although they've suggested a new starter an battery.

I've been told it bump starts OK, sometimes starts on the key when fully hot, but otherwise is a total pig.

I did notice the rad fans spinning when cranking, don't know if that's normal or not for these?

My thinking is if it bumps OK then there's possibly too much juice being pulled through the starter for the various sensors to work OK, but I've been told it still won't start even with either good jump leads or a booster hooked up.

The owner claims to have replaced the starter (with a s/h one looking at it) and either the crank position sensor or cam one (or both, hard to tell). The wiring does looks a bit tatty, and there's an LPG kit fitted, but the LPG side of things doesn't seem to have caused the problem from what I could make out.

Anyone any ideas?

Firstly ascertain excactly what car, what engine, and what history of attempted repairs its had.

Is the current starter spinning the motor over at a decent rate?

If so, then you need to look at earths, supply volts to ECU / fuel pump / igntion system, the ignitor (ign amp in jap speak) ECU fault codes, why the rad fans are on when cranking (could just be a bridged temp switch if they run all the time),

basically 3 + hrs of detective work before you probably find the problem.

The fact it runs well when running (you dont say to the contrary) suggests its not got serious ECU / sensor problems..

& if not odds are the engine earth straps loose or the batterys buggered.

My guess is that the mixture isn't being richened for a cold start because of a temperature sensor being u/s. I would start by looking into the rad fan on problem, it could be the same fault.
