Oh No, Another Tyre Question

I'm fully aware of the new tyres not being designed for tubes (it comes up frequently on the car forums I use), but I checked the inner ribs on the Firestones (it's the ribs that wear through the tubes) and they're very smooth so not *too* bad. Like I said, I'll be trying to get the tyre popped off, tube binned and tyre back on with a shiny new valve and rebalance at some point. I was told the wheels were designed for tubes, but I'm not convinced - They're 1969ish (the particular style was only made for a couple of years) so I'd be surprised if they're not tubeless. When the old tyres came off 3 out of four had tubes, but I had that on another old car a couple of years ago, where a PO had obviously had tubes thrown in as the sidewalls were nowhere near air tight any more...

Either the bulged one was defective from the factory, or the ape fitting it mangled it - Given the amount of swearing he did and levering and brute force involved trying to get the bead to sit against the rim I suspect the latter. The other three went on perfectly well without tubes or fuss, so I'm putting the problems down to the slight surface rust I saw in that wheel and a general level of expertise from the average tyre fitter (a bit like the lot at the local branch, who waved a torque wrench to look professional, but had it set *way* too high).

The local tip will indeed take tyres, so long as you look private. Go in a car and drop no more than 2 or 3 off at a time and they're fine with it. Go in a van with double figures in the back and they might be a bit less enthusiastic!
