Oil consumption rate?

It's more than I'd be happy with but it has done a lot of miles. Are you sure it's not leaking any? Audi / VW engines are pretty solid IME.

If you get an equivalent weight of oil, it will still leak past piston rings, but it takes a higher temperature for it to burn off.

Synthetic oils aren't that synthetic. If I could be bothered, I could dig out the trade magazine that had a large article on the various classes of oils, and how 'synthetic' oils were heading in two different directions (one continuing to have a mineral oil base, and another moving more towards a truly synthetic oil)

Like you, I think my bet would be on crankshaft/camshaft oil seals, especially the crankshaft one at the bellhousing end.

"Lubes'n'Greases" magazine is one of many trade publications. Heavy going for those only mildly interested.

So how did my sis in London manage to get a V reg just a couple of months ago for 5 grand?

Hi Alex, you need to determine whether it also uses a litre in the next

1000 miles. If this is the first time it's dropped so fast, it's probably just because you're reading it differently - hot v cold; parked on flat rather than a slope; etc.

She got lucky? There aren't a lot of them about in my area.

I've put a litre in now, let's see how she goes. And yes, I always check oil when she's cold and parked on a flat surface.

Did it have mega miles on it? Probably not.

There aren't huge numbers anywhere. They are just another car looking for a punter. Tidy ones might go for a small premium but tatty, high milers, who wants them apart from their current owners? There won't be people queuing for them at *any* price. For a true value, sell at an auction and see how much it makes.

Name that car :-) My car smells like its burning oil but doesnt use a noticable amount of oil on the dipstick over a 500mile round trip.

We were somewhere around Barstow, on the edge of the desert, when the drugs began to take hold. I remember "Huw" saying something like:

Top shelf by the sound of it.

Nobody listening? Good. Let's keep this between ourselves. Shhhh! this dirty magazine is available on-line. Google and thou shalt find. At your own risk.

Hey you! You've been listening. That's rude.

Now you come to mention it, yes. Full of greasy filth.
