OT? : New car suggestions

Hi,

I currently have a Nissan Pulsar (Sunny) GTi-R, which I have tuned a little doing the work mainly by myself. (0-60 in just under 5s) I am now in need of a larger car which I hope will meet the following, roughly in order of importance :-

1) Easy to self-maintain and tune. 2) Large enough rear seat for 11-yr old, 6-yr old and baby seat., decent boot. 3) At least 200bhp, preferably turbocharged. 4) Preferably not FWD. 5) Cost about £5000. 6) Quick and fun when I'm on my own.

Anyone any suggestions/comments on the following cars :-

1) SR20DET powered 200SX - (possibly not enough rear seat space) 2) Impreza turbo - (possibly a dog if it's this cheap) 3) Legacy turbo - (can't find any for sale in N.Ireland) 4) Galant VR4 - (fuel consumption/running costs seem comparitively high) 5) 325 BMW - (I know nothing about them)

Many thanks, Aaron.

Definitely not enough rear seat space!

Don't know much about the rest. Legacy seems the most practical while retaining the fun factor if you can get one of the ones that was an Impreza chassis (maybe they all were).

Go for a Volvo 740/940 Turbo Estate. Cheap as chips, and running costs surprisingly low. Fastest luxury van I can think of.

Celica GT-four? 250-ish bhp stock with 0-60 in around 6 seconds. Plently room, cheap now (good 1994-95 example for the kind of money you want to spend) and probably the cheapest car to insure for its performance bracket. I bought one recently and am well impressed. 4 wheel drive is great in the snow too!

Although its FWD what about a last off the line 620Ti?

I hadn't considered the Celica as I thought the rear seat space wouldn't be much better than the GTi-R?

When you remove the artifical 186 mph limiter which Suzuki kindly fit, it will do so easily! This is achieved in 5 minutes courtesty of a £50 plug in widget available from most accessory stores.

- Great car. Tail happy though, but HUGE fun

- Insurance will cost as much as the car. Apparently a new group is being created for these rally reps due to the ridiculous accident/theft claims. My mate (32, low risk area, full NCB, licence 14 years, no accidents or points) couldn't get a quote below £1400!

- Nice but as most are imports, insurance problem also applies

- Had one for a week from work (E36 on a K plate). Blinding bit of kit, seriously quick and great fun to chuck about. Drinks fuel though (couldn't better 28 mpg driving it gently and it averaged 24 in normal use), and interior quality was quite disappointing..

I've got the 525 with almost the same engine and I get around 25mpg, split between sitting in queues and driving very fast. It will do 33 on a long easy run. Your figures sound a bit low. As far as I can gather *my* figures are a bit low and it could probably do with sensors replacing and injectors cleaning etc.
