Peugeot 405 diesel engine replace cost?

I'm looking at a 405 diesel family estate, '02 reg. Looks basically OK but the engine's got 226K on it. Even for a diesel this seems high to me and I'd expect to have to replace it at some point. What would I be looking at for a reconned engine plus fitting from a reasonable independent (rather than franchise)? Is there anywhere particularly good to go for such an op (I'm in Reading)?

The seller's asking £1800 which I guess translates to he'd take about £1500. Does this sound reasonable?

Lastly what's the best way to check for outstanding HP etc on it? (I guess I can ask DVLA for stolen status.) Autotrader want £25 which is OK compared to the value of the motor but is it £25 more than I need to pay? :-)

It's nowhere near ready for replacement!

Pug diesels will do many more miles than that - reckon on doing the same mileage again before it needs major work.

The gearbox is likely to give issues before the engine does - shouldn' cost more than £150-£200 to source and fit a 'box, though.

I'm pretty sure it'll be an HDI model at that age - if so, look for a receipt for a new high pressure diesel pump. They do wear out and can cost hundreds to replace. If it hasn't had one fairly recently, budget for it in your negotiations.

Doesn't seem *too* bad for an 02 plate 406 (note, it's a 406 on an 02 plate, not a 405).

I'd make a judgement on the seller - nice respectable area, nice polite seller, then you'll probably be safe - especially if it comes with good history.

Dodgy area, council estates etc, knuckle-dragging seller and house full of unruly kids, then I'd be a bit more wary.

Finally - look for signs it has been used as a minicab. At that age and mileage, it more than likely has been. Especially if owned by the 2nd type of seller ;-)

If it has been a minicab, run away..... quickly.

D'oh! I meant 406

He says he's recently had a new box in it

yup, HDI. What does that mean?

Was there a 405 family? Maybe that's where I got confused ...

He turned up on my doorstep asking if I wanted my drive tarmaced, then he asked if I wanted to sell my old (1978) caravan, then asked if I wanted to buy the car! It had a magnetic orange flashing light bar on the top, MOTORWAY MAINTENANCE stickers on the back and a sign with TARMACADAM SPECIALISTS and a moby no on the side. He said he lived in Barmouth and had done a lot of tooling up and down the motorways in it, but had just got a tranny van so didn't need the car. He seemed happy for me to run any checks on it and I took some photos of it including one with him standing in front of it - which he encouraged me to do as though to show he hadn't anything to hide. Seemed OK in a rough diamond sort of way but obviously given that he lives the other end of the country and I don't know him from Adam I have to trust him as far as I can throw him...

Apart from checking that there isn't a huge HP debt or other legal 'feature' what's the worst I could lose on it mechanically? If you reckon the engine's still got life in it, the gearbox has been done (allegedly) and the diseasel pump will need doing soon are there any other major issues I should check for?

New, recon. or one that's about to explode 2 days after buying it?

No bloody idea. It does mean it's a common rail diesel. Which means it has the high-power pump that can give issues at higher mileage.

Yes, there was. It was replaced by the 406.

Heh.

Regular servicing, cambelt changes done on time (make sure there isn't one due next week, for example) and that's about it. Expect the trim to rattle and bits to fall off, but don't expect rust 'cos Peugeot sorted out rust proofing with the 205 back in the early 80s.

Personally, I'd be looking at stuff more local to you - I've bought cars miles way before now, but it's not something I'd recommend.

Dunno but since he's using the car to travel for his living he'd be an idiot to go for option 3! Are recons OK?

Trouble is Diesel Familys are like hen's teeth - at least on Autotrader, and not much on eBay.
