Pug 1.9 Diesel engine

Hi all.

Father-in-law has a J reg 1.9 (I assume) Pug 205 Diesel (non turbo).

He'd had some problems with a tiny oil leak coming from the left hand side of the engine (looking into the bay from the outside).

He took it to a local diesel place who, as far as I can tell, have replaced them camshaft oil seals, then the camshaft itself, and it was still leaking.

They've now told him it'll take a new head to fix the problem - I'm assuming that a bearing or something has worn somewhere, causing the new camshaft oil seal to not make properly. He's quoted 250 for the head, plus

150-200 to do the change itself.

It's not a big leak, just a drop now and again.

My personal advice was given it's a J reg, done 120k miles, just keep driving until it goes bang, which may or may not happen.

1) I realise oil & cambelts don't mix. Is just a small drip likely to cause problems perishing the cam belt?

2) Is this even a belt driven OHC engine?

3) Is my diagnosis a reasonable one?

4) How was my advice to him?

Thanks for any advice,

Pete.

You are right. That would also be my advice. In any case a small leak like you describe would be unlikely to need a head. The garage are taking the piss. Tell him to live with it, save his money and drive it until either it goes bang or fails an MOT test. Then replace it.

I'd go with that. It's the unburstable XUD unit which tends to leak oil from the camshaft cover (Cured by a new gasket and lots of industrial grade silcone seal), camshaft bearing seal-cured by new seal a midges away from the line drawn by the original and crankshaft seal (same cure). Drive shaft seals also give way at high miles. Check the cambelt for oil contamination, 'cos if that gives way ~(:-! My old Citroen Xantia, same engine- was sold on to a friend a year ago. Now has 152,000 miles up. Never missed a beat. I just make sure my driveway gates are closed when he comes calling. That block paving cost a bomb. DaveK.

It actually looks like it's a 1.8, not a 1.9. I'd assumed the turbo was just the blown NA diesel, but obviously not.

They call themselves a diesel specialist, and by the look of it, they've already replaced the seal, then the seal with more gunk to seat it, a new seal and a new cam, and it's still leaking.

They'd actually removed the engine, and had it steam cleaned, and were running it on the bench, so they claim it's coming from the cam

I'll tell him that a couple of people have recommended the same!

Thanks,

Pete.
