Yes... that happened on the old solenoid. I have yet to test the new one in the same way.
I have not yet checked the lights, however when I turn the ignition switch off and the engine continues to run the battery waring light comes on and stay on until I stall the engine.

Yes it stays running, or yes it stops???
The battery warning light will come on with the ignition off, and the engine running. It's because the alternator back feeds the warning lamp.
I have just tested the new solenoid::
With the ignition off 0 volts.....OK With the ignition on 12.78 v.....OK
1st test.....Engine running...Ignition off....Engine still runs. 2nd test....Engine running...Ignition off....Engine stopped. 3-5 tests...Engine running...Ignitionj off...Engine still runs.In the morning I will now remove the new solenoid and check for any dirt or muck in the hole and check that the plunger in the solenoid switch is in the correct position...ie that is straight and seated correctly in the pump and solenoid switch.

Make sure the solenoid has the spring fitted, it will be inside the plunger where you push it into the solenoid body.
If you find any iron fillings in the hole where your solenoid goes, the pump is toast. (from your description, I think your pump is toast anyway)
