Primera overheating problem

PRIMERA SLX 2.0 PETROL I just did a trip down the motorway and noticed the temperature gauge unusually high but not in the red - as I pulled off the motorway steam was pouring out of the bonnet. I turned off the engine and discovered the hose connected to the block was completely (blown?) off. After reattaching and putting on a clip (which was missing) I topped up with water and returned home. But it is still overheating and losing steam - seems like from the expansion tank.

Anyone any idea what the problem might be? Water pump not working? Also there NO HEAT coming through the heater. I will take a look tomorrow when it's light but any comments appreciated in the meantime.

Altogether now:

Headgasket has blown, either before or after the hose problem.

By all means first try filling with coolant mix, getting any air out of the system and try again (I would) But pound to a penny it is head gasket.

You didn't say what year the Primera was. The P10 (pre-late 96) radiators weren't of the best quality and when they're on the way out the first symptoms are overheating at sustained >70mph motorway speeds. Of course, if this goes unnoticed for a while, the hose or head gasket could blow. The later P11 radiators are quality items.

I would check the thermostat and make sure it is stuck closed. might be something simple and easy to fix. Scott

It's just possible if you lost a lot of water and didn't follow the re-filling procedure you just have an air lock. Lets hope so - after all it is Xmas.

I took it to a garage and when I mentioned there was no hot air coming from the heater he was just about 100% that the head gasket was gone. I've no idea why this would happen--the car only has 40k and like new; I guess if the thermostat failed or fans (which don't seem to be kicking in now at all) then that would do it. But there was not warning-the temp gauge never reached red - which probably means there was no water (just steam) at that location......

Garage says about £300 to get the head skimmed etc....

---again any further comments appreciated
