Prius question

Not of any importance, just curious... I had a lift in a colleague's Prius yesterday and didn't like to comment, but every time he braked there was a slight scraping sound like brake pads getting down to the rivets. Is that just the noise of the charging system cutting in and they all do it, or is it buggered? He didn't drive like someone with a huge amount of mechanical sympathy...

they don't usually make that noise!! From your description it needs pads. Most Japanese cars including Toyota use an audible wear indicator on the pads rather than a warning light, so probably the car is trying to tell him it needs pads very soon. The indicator touches the disc with about three mm of pad left.

Ta, that certainly fits in with the sound.
