How many people in the UK do YOU think might be able to offer an insight into the workings of US petrol retail?

Non of them do. What they do do is to franchise them.
And?
I can. It's hardly relevant to the UK petrol retailing, asking about US gasoline.
Conor teases everyone. That was mild.....
Wrong. They do run some of them, it's just that franchise outlets are more prolific.
(For example the BP/Safeway sites which, ISTR, are fully under BP control now)
Neil, Here's a more polite reply.
First of all it is somewhat insensitive to post a question quibbling about 3 cents on a gallon on a UK group, especially when we pay more like 3 times the price.
Secondly this is a UK group, we are unlikely to have any interest in, or knowledge of, US pricing issues.
Thirdly, I would have thought that in an overtly capitalist country, the answer would be obvious - to maximise profit.

D'you know those are almost exactly the words I used to my missus last week?
Nose And Hands Are You? Nibble Almonds, Hay and Yams?

Well, to be honest I don't know, but someone might. I suggested a couple of things that might be relevent. Doesn't hurt to ask.

The message from "Malc" contains these words:
You can take Malc out of the shed, but you can't take the shed out of Malc.

No, I'm sure by voluntary membership will get in as the 51st, and leave those other two to fight it out for the remaining places.
Absolutely old bean. Someone at work was commenting on a Sky advert in which they claimed that comapred with Sky terrestrial TV wouldn't show anything more interesting than the top 100 sheds. Needless to say I'd watch that.
The independent doesn't have a head office full of fat cats on $1,000,000 pa? The independent just has his car and doesn't have a fleet of limos, helicopters and jets? The independent doesn't have a high rent marble lined head office? The independent doesn't do national adverts? The independent is owner operated and his wage is his profit so he doesn't need to make a 10% profit to send back to head office for the shareholders 5% dividend?
Hire a private investigator or do it yourself. Hang out at the service station until the tanker arrives and then follow it back to the depot. Do the same for the other one. If they both go to the same depot and fill from the same tanks it's the same stuff and someone is profiteering. And 3 cents on 2.85 is 1% difference hardly a big discrepancy.
Bet you can find vending machines that do tins or small bottles of Coke for 500% more than what it costs (in cents/floz) for a big bottle at a supermarket. Now that's something to get upset about.
Hello, For whats it worth, a few servo's here in the states are company owned , but not very many. Maybe 10 or 20% , and thats a guess. I cant speak for BP , as we do not have them in the western states. I just want to know what a "seppo " is.
Cheers Scott
Seppo = Septic Tank = Yank
OUCH !
A self-depreciation thing? What are you on about. It doesn't imply that they smell like septic tanks, it's just rhyming slang.
