This leads me to believe that the compressor is not starting , only problem

The compressor will be driven off an accessory belt direct from the engine (worth checking first!) via a electro-magnetic clutch. Presumably you could disconnect the clutch and apply power directly to make it engage (at your own risk!) to check that. Otherwise it could be one of the pressure switches in the system that prevent the compressor running under high or low pressure situations.

I take it that means it will have to be regassed once leak is fixed ? :(

If this is the case then yes. It's not too expensive and if your air con hasn't been serviced in the last 2 years then definitely worthwhile. Look in yellow pages for aircon specialists. Probably about 60 to 80 pounds including gas and lube.

yup :) get the leak tested once the leak has been found, get it fixed then regas it and job done make sure they put oil in the gas as well as the leak detector agent so if there is another leak somewhere else it will show up

then again, it might have just been natural wastage and it will just need topping up again but if there is a elak them perpare yourself for a few hundred £'s worth of repairs

what was fitted and where did the chaffage occur? it might be useful for future reference :)
