My 1996 lwb Frontera has developed a noise coming from underneath the

Could be a loose exhaust heatshield, or maybe even the exhaust itself breaking up internally (baffles corroded etc). Knocking along the exhaust with your fist (cold exhaust, of course!) will show up any rattles.
