Carlton 2.0i Auto - What Crankshaft Shaft Sensor !

Hi,

A while ago I posted "Carlton starting gremlins - Helppppp".

A few people suggested that the "crankshaft sensor" be given a clean (held in by a 10mm bolt at the end of the engine block).

I took it to a 'Garage' and they said this model did not have a crankshaft sensor !!!!! (since it has a rotor arm and dizzy) Has a sensor on flysheel ?????

Is this true ??, are they tellin porkies ?? (car is 1992 J plate 2.0i Auto-Diplomat)

If it definately has one, where exactly should I look as I peer into the engine bay.

Any help greatly appreciated.

Andy.

(Those Fuel injection system relays are bleeding expensive !- =A330 quid !)

I would take it back to a garage that knows what they are looking for! The crank sensor is mounted on the same side as the exhaust manifold of the engine, just behind the power steering pump and air conditioning pump bracket. The wiring for it should run up and across the top of the timing belt cover (black plastic shroud at the front of the cover).

I can't remember ever having to change a crank sensor on a Carlton with AC, but there is the chance it could be a complete sod (i.e having to loosen/remove the pump bracket) or easy (like the Vectra 1.8/2.0 with AC where it is easier to change than a vehicle without AC).

It will be at the front of the engine at the bottom near the crank pulley, there will be a cable going from it, as this car has an ECU it uses information from the sensor, I have worked on a smilar engine in a Cavalier,a 2.0 NE.

Is there a sensor to give the spark timing inside the distributor? Ie, a replacement for points? I'd think not on an engine that recent. The dizzy is probably just switching the spark to the correct plug - they did this before one coil per cylinder became the norm.

The sensor could well be in the bellhousing reading pulses off the flywheel.
