Hi, I've got a Golf Estate Mk4 and the headlamps have dip beam bulbs, main beam bulbs and fog light bulbs,. They are the originals that VW put in at manufacture in 2002.
Can anyone recommend some lightbulbs to replace all six that give a better quality of light, remains road legal and does not cost the earth?

Any bulbs will be better than what you have got in. After 8 years they will be blackened and dim. I put some Power Plus bulbs in my car and am very pleased with them. See

Get an HID conversion kit, then.
Got a set I built for the E36. Have to take them out at MOT time though as it's a fail (no self levelling fitted).

It's an interesting point as those regs only really apply to a new build car. So retrofit HIDs may not need to.
I have them on my SD1. That was built with headlamp washers and self levelling suspension. But it's had three MOTs since they were fitted and they've not been queried.

Proposed changes to match EU fuckwittery was all over the Internet last week.
HID doesn't comply with C&U not even on NEW cars. UK lighting regs are only for filament bulbs and don't specifically exclude use of discharge or led bulbs or specifically demand use of filament bulbs. If filament bulbs are not fitted the lights don't have to comply to any part of the regs - though this may mean they are not obligatory position lights or headlamps. Type test regs do demand leveling and wash but unlike a lot of Europe (Germany/France) a retrofit in UK doesn't have to comply with any standard. The retrofit items that do have to meet standards are specified in various other regs, like towbars, exhausts, brakes and "E" marked Filament bulbs.

It didn't. Which is why the proposed "visual" inspection (check the actual EU directive...) won't be a problem here, but will be for those people with non-TuV-approved mods in TuV countries.
