Replacing escort MKVI Brake shoes

I have done this job a couple of times, but last time I managed to snap one of the stub axel mounting bolts. The haynes manual tells you to remove the drum by undoing the 4 stub axel bolts. My local garage said that you should remove the drums by removing the hub nut & withdrawing the bearing. Who is right? I've had no experiance of working with self seating bearings (where you torque the hub not upto 260nM), what is the cage around the hub nut? Do I bend this cage off, or turn it with the hub nut? Does it do any harm to remove the hub this way? I assume you still grease the bearings like the old split pin setup.

Thanks

Dave

the cage keeps the washer with the bearing, do not remove it, preferably replace the nut if you remove it.

ordinary grease is fine

either method of removal is acceptable but the 4 bolt way is less work (usually) and is the garage way.

The same thing happened to me when I tried to remove the bolts. Ended up in a trip to the scrappy (on a Sunday morning) to acquire a new stub-axle.

If you remove the hub nut, it should be replaced with a new one (£5-£10 ea IIRC) and not re-used. Yep, it's one helluva torque. A long bar should release it OK. When it came to re-fitting, my torque wrench didn't go as high as the specified torque, so I tightened it to the max. setting on my wrench and guessed the rest. The wheel's not fallen off yet ;-) If the wheel bearings are anything near to needing replaced you might as well do them at the same time.

You must be a bit unlucky, as I have removed probably a few hundred and never had one snap, mind you, I usually use an air impact wrench with a flexysocket to undo them, so I know I am turning them the right way !! :)
