Sister has a Ford Mondeo TD, which occasionally takes to revving high all of a sudden, i.e - sitting idling at the lights, and then revs up. Local garage man reckons it's because oil is getting in, and the engine is showing signs of wear 'n tear. Before it gets serious (recon engine !) , is this common or could there be another reason ?. (I thought maybe MAF or some other sensor)
Just how high is it revving, and when it does so, is it accompanied by excess blue / black smoke and rattling more than usual? Is it difficult to get back under control? If so then its definately running on its own oil and your sister has a grenade waiting to go off. Its usually caused by excess crankcase pressurisation either from worm rings, or blocked PCV system. However it usually only happens when running at high speed, where crankcase pressure is greatest and the engine will then suddenly begin to rev and rev until something lets go. A very frightening experience . Have it carefully checked out, for signs of blow by, oil in the inlet manifold, a failing turbo oil seal and faulty pcv etc, as well as a problem with the injector pump etc..
seconded it's called dieseling or something and basicly it's the way diesels work they detonate the charge when it gets hot enough and what's ahappening is that the engine has worn to the extent that the oil is getting in and mixing with the feul and it just runs and runs same thing with petrol engines when they don't turn off whan you turn the key you could have another fault, but the engine wear is most likely to be the cause

if you keep on driving with this, there will be a time you can't even shutdown the engine. It then entirely runs on engine oil. revving around
5000-6000 rpm.
Had this with a Sierra 1.8 TD. It started on the highway suddenly with a ticking sound, pulled over, stopped the engine, waited and almost impossible to start. Ran fine until 2500 rpm was hit, the engine ran away, only stoppable by appling the brakes and letting go of the clutch. Sounded terrible, spitted out enormous clouds of blue/back/white smoke.
Of course, the engine was completely knackered afterwards while it ran just fine before all this happened. And that's no fun if this happens just 3 hours after purchase.
