I'm told many of these engines suffer from coolant leaks past the liners. Is there a DIY test for this on a stripped engine or any other way to tell?

only way to be sure is to have the block machined and welded and get shrink fit liners , adds 400 quid to the cost of the rebuild
Thanks. One of the Ebay Rover V-8 engine specialists say they test each block for this before reconditioning and I wondered how. The more worrying thing is they reckon a large majority fail.
Accompanied by the sound of a chisel on slate Dave Plowman (News), managed to produce the following words of wisdom
It's more often the 4.6 than the 4.0.
Is it a 4.0 or a 3.9... the 4.0 has four bolt mains, 3.9 doesn't.
It does happen, but I don't think it's anywhere near as often as made out.
