Rover K-series jingly noise

Hi all,

My Rover K series engine (42k miles) has started making a jingly noise at

3500 revs and over.

Are there any pointers you can offer for me to look into? Here's some more clues...

It sounds like it's coming from the cam belt end.

It's a jingly noise not dissimilar to pinking, but I don't think it's that - it's louder, more continuous and not load related.

It starts reliably at 3500 revs and continues whilever revs are over this (but the engine noise starts to drown it out as revs get higher)

It doesn't matter if the clutch is up or down or the car is moving or stationary.

So these are classic symptoms of ....?

Any help appreciated!

Cheers,

Steve

most likely a knackered tensioner roller. Or a worn out water pump. (almost equally common.)

Ah, cool. What's the next step to investigate these two likely options?

On the difficulty scale, what am I looking at? Water pump on my old mk2 Fiesta = level 1, changing the cam belt on a my mk 5 Fiesta = level 10 (don't look back in the recent archives... ;-)
