Alarms - how to stop 'em

Had a new battery fitted recently at local tyre / exhaust/ battery shop , and as new one was connected a deafening alarm started up. Disconnect pronto, try hitting everything, ignition keys on etc, disconnect reconnect battery. Finally it stopped after about 20min eardrum pain, still don't know exactly what stopped it, but OK he should have attached an old motorbike 12v as a keeper before disconnecting the old battery. What bothers me now is that that horrendous noise might start up at 2am one fine night - and I have no idea how to stop it. 2nd hand car came with no alarm controls instructions, all can see is under the bonnet a device with the name COBRA 5801 seems to be the source of the noise.

Any clues, what it is supposed to do, how to stop it doing it?? (Laguna RT

1997). Thanks Lol

the alarm has a battery back up system , as soon as you disconnect the battery the alarm goes off

most alarms will be activated if the batt is disconected. it done on purpose to stop the electrics being cut. and your car being towed away by thiefs.

Had a car some years ago fitted with an "aftermarket" alarm. (Sorry about the americanism) Hidden under a rubber flap there was a key switch which would allow disabling/enabling of alarm before and after battery disconnection. Can't remember whether it stopped the alarm once activated. Mine came with instructions.
