Rumble when turning corner - Honda CR-V

( Some of you may recall I was enquiring some months back about getting a car for my wife when she travels in all weathers across varied terrain. The most popular response was a CR-V, and that's what I bought. It does the job and she loves it. Cheers, Guys, for your advice on that :0) )

So, a CR-V, petrol, autobox, 06 plate, 20k miles...

In the last couple of weeks we've noticed that if you do a tight-ish turn left or right, e.g. while doing a 3-point turn, there is a bit of a judder that sounds like it's coming from the rear n/s. This happens whether or not the brakes are being applied.

Today the car was serviced by my local garage, whom I consider wholly reliable. They've checked it out and cannot find anything wrong, but agree they can hear a judder. It's not a bad judder, but it wasn't there a month ago. If it was a much bigger vehicle, with big fat tyres, I'd have suggested it was tyre shudder as the tyre turns around it's vertical axis on the tarmac...possible??

I know it's a bit of a vague symptom, but any ideas anyone...is it a known 'problem' on these cars?

Cheers

Jeff

Just noticed I entitled this 'Rumble...', but it is definitely more of a judder than a rumble.

I'm not familiar with the CR-V, but is it 4WD with a viscous coupling?

The reason I mention it is ISTR Freelanders doing this if the viscous coupling in the propshaft is going.

*googles*

It is 4WD then, but uses some kind of electronically controlled diff.

Any unusual tyre wear?

Does it have CV joints? Could it be a worn CV on the one side?

Could it simply be the tyre shudder you mention - does it do it when the road it wet?

I'll take a look at the tyres...good point.

Hhmm, I've not been out in it yet in the wet, I'll keep an ear out for it. Thanks

There was a known issue with the 1st generation of CR-V with a rumbling sound coming from the rear diff. Something to do with rubber couplings within the diff breaking up with age and mileage as these vehicles use a fancy 2wd/4wd auto switching transmission. A guy at work has a '98 model with the rumble but as he was quoted about £900 to repair (don't know if it was Honda or other place) and as it is just a noise on full lock and with decent ammount of throttle applied he just lives with it.

I don't know if they cured it by the '06 models, might be worth a chat with your local Honda service department. I find they're easy to get info like this out of... and it helps me id parts for my '95 Civic :)

Interesting one, Chris, thanks...I'll add it to the list of possibilities, although 'shouldn't' be an issue at only 20k miles.

Unfortunately my local Honda dealer have a tendency to be offhand about enquiries. If you walk in with money and say "I want one of those" then they'll jump and sell it to you, but if you ask them to tell you about something then if it isn't a potential car sale they are very offhand and disinterested...so I try avoiding using their services if I can and go elsewhere where someone is interested in their customers.
