Rwindow wiper, boot, heated rewindow, fog light problem (ford escort Mk 6)

I have just replaced both my contact plate and also the 3 pin switch that has retracting brass pins, this is the one which is situated on the hatch of the 5 door MK 6 escort.

I replaced them as I was having problems with the rear windscreen wiper not operating plus the lights coming on inside the car on the switches for both the rear window heater and rear fog light when I try to operate the rear windscreen wiper.

I am also having problems with internal electric boot switch also, I am thinking it might be an earth problem, I have tried following some of the earth contacts and cleaned them up, but obviously since the problem is still present, then I must be missing something.

Also I have noticed that If I try and operate the rear wiper and hit the rear fog light button, the wiper move a bit, but very sluggish.

Been at it all morning and a bit frustrated at the moment, so any help would be most welcome.

TIA

Tony

try adding a temporary earth wire between tailgate and body, if it cures the problem then install a permanent one.

IIRC, these vehicles use the hatch hinges as the earth and these corrode causing a high resistance path. Check for voltage drop using a DVM on a low voltage range wired between clean metal on the hatch and clean metal on the body with heated rear window and wiper switched on. It should be no more than about 0.5 volts. If more, the only easy way to sort is to add an earth wire between hatch and body.

use a hammer and tap the metal hinge pins from side to side moving them and thus making good the earth on the tailgate

The hatch 'applicances' on the escort are all earthed through the bootlid hinge pins. Fine when new, not so fine soon after.

Install a decent 25amp capable earth wire between hatch and body.
