S80 engine surge

HI

Not sure if this is the right group to post this in but heres hoping..

I've got an old shape Volvo S80 2.9 (6 cylinder) auto which is suffering from quite powerful random engine surges when at low revs and at idle. Its almost caused me to collide with the car in front in queues twice now. Does anyone know what might be the cause?

Thanks for any help

from honest john website:

Check the state of air cleaner box. Open bonnet, look down the back of the air cleaner box and it may be bent out of shape. Volvo won't sell a lid only (which is usually the broken part) and the complete box is £139. When the lid is put on it exerts an unfair strain on the box and bends it leaving the lid only partially engaged which can lead to a broken lid then onto a damaged air mass sensor and on to dangerous surges when the car idles.

ETM.

Speak with your dealer, they are doing them at £139 for the body + abit for software update and labour.

Tim.

If the symptoms are like someone blipping the throttle at idle, it could be the electronic throttle wearing out. In the states there's been recalls due to consumer action over it, see link . It looks like there have been a few crashes caused by it. Some have been "lunging incidents" like your own. You might be able to try and get it replaced under guarantee.
