Anyone have 1999 - S80 electrical issue ?

I recently bought a 1999 S80 turbo from a friend. Nice care. Shortly after I bought it I started having trouble wioth the wipers and windows not working. They replaced the battery claiming a voltage issue. It worked for 3 days. So they replaced the alternator. It worked for 3 more days.

I have noticed that if I disconnect the battery and reconnect it - the problem goes away for a few days. But then the windows stop working and the wipers stop working, and the turn signals stop too. The dealer claims to have no idea what is wrong. Does anyone have any suggestions or ideas as to the root cause of this problem?

From the sounds of it you need a battery isolator so you can just reset the car every so often.

Sean, are you crazy? When you reset the battery as you describe, it screws up your clocks and any other things that require constant power. You must be one of those morons that repair cars for Volvo. It is clown engineering like this that gives Volvo cars the bad reputation they have today.

Oh yes - you are an asshole.

sure.. ;-) buy a 95-99 volvo....say a 850t / r wagon and put a bit of $ into fixing it up...boost the turbo a bit, hang some IPD parts on it...and you will have a very nice, fast volvo for < 10k.....go on a vacation w/the $ you will save.. ;-)

If the car is so crappy then how come every owner I ever run into just

*LOVES* their S80 and tells me it has been very reliable? How come my loaded S80 T-6 has performed flawlessly for 4 years even though I live near the ocean in the wet and muddy Pacific NW and take it on winter ski trips through the slush and mud, not gingerly mind you....

I guess beancounters like you have determined it's not worth the money because you can't afford it.

Is that so? I looked at your old posts on the alt.autos.volvo group and learned a lot.

It appears you had nothing but good to say about the S80 right up until your lease expired and you decided not to keep it. You had lots of glowing comments about solidity, reliability, etc. The only bad thing I noticed you wrote was that you had replaced two headlight bulbs! The following examples will prove that you loved your S-80, it was very reliable, you originally wanted the S80 T-6 but purchased the standard (probably because of cost). The car drove even better (than new) right up until your lease was expiring

thanx...

View: Complete Thread (10 articles) Original Format Newsgroups: alt.autos.volvoDate: 2002-05-10 08:12:59 PST i went ahead and dumped my s80 for a 240gl...the 240 is in great cond't...drives solid...everything works..just did a tune up.....question for today is..

for misc parts, is ipd still a "leader" in the "online" world of 1886 240 volvo parts? has any other online co's emerged in the last few years, to become a great place to browse and shop for older 240 parts?...w/the s80, i wasn't doin too much parts shopping...the "new" 240 needs some of the small stuff....panic handles, dome light, lighter..etc...

thanx in advance for feedback !!
