The windscreen washers on our Volvo S40 have stopped working. On examination, I find that the T-piece that splits the water between the two outlets has a red part with a hole in - and the water's just squirting out under
the bonnet. Has some kind of mount come loose, and why on Earth does the
T-piece have a hole in it?

Very very common fault on these cars, though usually on the 850 / 70 series, although the part is the same on the 40 series. That device is an anti drain valve, stops the wash water draining back to the bottle, or siphoning out. They're about £1.90 from the dealer and a simple replacement.
