Silencer soldering?

Hello NG,I have a question about my FIAT Cinquecento (1997). Please forgive theinadequateness of car related terms I will be using, as I am not anexpert and English is not my first language.The "main part" of my silencer has fallen down because of rust. Thepipes are still in place and seem OK. Of course, the "connectionpoints" (where the "main part" once joined the pipes) are rusty andthe "main part" of the silencer is a bit rusty as well.I was thinking about possible alternatives to sort this out, as I havebeen quoted £63 + VAT + £40 for the fitting, and this is not very farfrom the market value of the car in its entireness. I have a series ofquestions:1) Do you know whether it is possible/advisable/expensive to solderthe existing "main part" back into its place, and where I could go forsuch a service in London? I have been thinking that by doing this Icould save on both buying a new silencer and the fitting.2) Do you know if it is at all advisable to get a second-hand silencerfrom a car dismantler? (I have been quoted £30)3) Do you know of any other solution I haven't thought of, which couldmake sense considered the market value of the car?4) Shall I just take this up as an opportunity to change my car?I do really welcome any comments on this, as I feel confused on what'sthe best course of action.Thanks,Mario

In general, once a silencer has rusted through in one place, patching it is a very short term fix because it will soon go in another.

Might be worth it, although that sounds a lot. The trouble again is that they tend to rust from the inside, so an inspection of the outside isn't much guide to the life left.

Depends. If the car is otherwise OK, you're hardly going to get something guaranteed better for the price of an exhaust.

Surely your Cinq's got to be worth more than £100, it must have a veryhigh mileage or a lot of damage.  What is the mileage?  btw, I've gota Fiat Seicento SX (V reg, 899cc).

I paid £5 once for a used toyota box & 40 quid for a used (but nearlynew) BMW box which retails at over 200.Patching (welding) a box that's so far gone is difficult & timeconsuming.
