My 1.6 Focus from 2002, trying out Shell's new unleaded petrol, 95 octane, I took the plugs out and the visible ceramic insulator encircling the centre electrode was red. The plugs have done about 3,500 miles from new. There was also a light dusting of soft carbon. Light enough to be transparent.
I have never seen red insulators before, is this an indication of a problem?

why did you take the plugs out? Plugs come up with various colours inc. green, which is odd when you first see it, I have not seen red, but if I did I would not worry about it., it must depend upon the fuel used as that is all that should be getting there.

I removed the plugs to do a compression test.

that is a rare thing to do these days ! I can't actually remember when I last got a compression tester out!!

the strobe still gets an occasional outing, maybe once every two months, can't remember the last time I used the dwell meter though, or even where it is!

I built an electronic ignition circuit (from Practical Electronics). It worked brilliantly and started my MkII Cortina in any weather. Trouble was it blacked out radios for hundreds of yards around with interference. Some bloke came over to me one icy morning and threatend to report me to the Post Office! :-) (ps I didn't know it was doing it)
