Does she not do maths at school? Come to think of it, did you? Do her parents spoon feed her everything? My God is she going to have trouble later on in life.
The message from Adrian contains these words:
An accquainances daughter is in her second year of A-level Computer Science. And lost all her coursework because she didn't make backups.
She also couldn't open an .rtf file I sent her because Word by default only shows .doc files in the "open" dialogue.
Well the Electrical regs certainly stopped me connecting my toaster to the gas supply. Dang.
Free Country My Ass. Your formula will need some work when they start charging you by the mile :->

Are you 14?
(Seemingly so, since you top posted without trimming anything)
I can understand where your coming from Conor, and it's easy to criticise, I used to do the do the same with youngsters.
Remember it wasn't so very long ago the students where criticised for using a calculator instead of working things out in their heads or on paper.
Remember, when a politician gets a team together to solve a problem it doesn't mean the person is an idiot, it means they are using their brains to find the answer quickly.
The same thing goes for everyone else, you don't need to know how to work things out, you only need the answer.
Sorry, but you can't stop progress.
Apologies, my previous info is wrong.
I've since learned that it is only illegal to supply a power lead with a plug fitted on to it. All new electrical devices when supplied with power lead, the lead must be fitted with a moulded plug on the end.
I'm with you on this one. "Miles per Gallon" is a pretty self-explanatory unit of measurement. Number of miles divided by number of Gallons. Doing a simple google search using just the words "gallons litres", with "Pages from the UK" checked, brings up enough links to give a clue as to how to convert from litres to Gallons.
Peter
Shouldn't do. Even if they were to charge £5M/mile the amount of miles the car did per gallon of fuel wouldn't be changed one iota.
Peter
Only a very small one though.
Peter
Says it all about modern so-called "qualifications".
Peter
I like it - 'veiw spreedsheet', and 'formula's', I mean. Real ng material.

I saw "Ladie's heel's and sole's - £4" the other day.
Lots of people go through life with no idea of basic arithmetic.
I once used an MPG example in a spreadsheet training course I wrote and ran for customer support staff at a major office equipment company. Trainees were given the number of litres of fuel used to fill the tank at the associated odometer readings. To make life easier they were also given the litres/gallon conversion factor. The exercise had to be changed after the first course was run because the majority of trainees had no idea of how to do the calculation, let alone put it in a spreadsheet.
What really gets up my nose is the number of public figures/celebrities/politicians/W.H.Y. who admit to being innumerate, and even appear to boast about it. To me that's like admitting you're illiterate, which is something no-one like that would consider acceptable
Peter Twydell ( snipped-for-privacy@nospam.demon.co.uk) gurgled happily, sounding much like they were saying :
"This is not 'numbers for numpties' - I'm here to teach you how to use a spreadsheet. If you can't even count, you're wasting my time and yours"
