Steering problem?

It could just be a slack belt. £3 or so to replace on most cars (tightening it up usually only solves the problem for a few weeks). If you can get a screech when the belt slips on full lock, you can be sure this is the problem.

Thanks DP. The steering isn't hard to operate; its just doesn't self-centre properly. Could this still be down to a slack belt?

Suspension? ISTR reading steering self centring has something to do with (virtual) king pin inclination. I'm only guessing mind.

If it's caused by the belt being slack (and slipping), the screech will tell you. If there's no screech, it must be something else.

No. Self centreing is down to steering geometry, caster, camber, and tracking, etc. Odd front tyres, or uneven pressures can also have an effect. The p/s belt doesn't influence self centreing in any way. Mike.

Ah, thanks Mike. I'll start with the pressures, then if that doesn't fix it, I'll have to try a garage. Any idea where to go and how much a full steering check and set up might cost?

I would guess anything from £40 upwards. There are many garages that will say they can do it, but IME, and from reading these n/g's not all are as competent as they should be. In general, you'd best steer clear of Kwick-Fit type places. Mike. but finding somewhere that
