Stupid speculation

I've noticed those horrid blue add on rev counters on pods that the erm.. cruisers add on to the cars that they ruin.

Is there any way to add a rev counter to an old car that hasn't got one? I'd assume that the wiring just isn't there for it. '92 Pug 205 1.8d.

I'd never have thought of boat yards. Stupid considering my upbringing with lots of cousins and uncles running trawlers. I'm not far from lots of canal now so it can't hurt going to the loal yards here.

I put in a very basic tiny one sited on the top shelf of the dash in a much older car, a Mini, in the 60's. I can't remember now how it was wired to the engine, but it certainly was a simple job, for at the time, I knew next to nothing about electronics. However, having made your choice of the model, you may be able to get the relevant info from the manufacturer.

Incidentally if you want to dabble on installing meters, gauges, and indicator lights on your instrumentation-challenged Pug 205, I came across on the web -- haven't bookmarked it! -- one small LCD display module, only perhaps about 3" wide, which had all the usual indicator lights, plus two circular scales of some sort of gauges at the centre. One was a tacho definitely, but I can't recall what the other was. I was surprised so many could be jammed into that tiny oblong display. You might want to search for it.

Oops....the tacho on the Mini was an analogue one, not electronic.

And probably ran off the ignition circuit, not much use on a diesel ;)
