Taxing a vehicle bought at auction

Jun 07, 2015 7 Replies

Last week I bought a car at auction. I have the V5 but BCA kept the tear off part of the V5 to notify DVLA of new ownership. I also have the MOT certificate.

Will the Post Office accept the V5 ( without the ownership change part ), the MOT certificate and a certificate of insurance so I can tax the vehicle or will I have to wait for the updated V5 to arrive in the post? I used BCA's delivery service so I have not driven the car yet.

Thanks.

DVLC say: You can tax the vehicle using the New Keeper Supplement (V5C/2) part of the Vehicle Registration Certificate (V5C) online or by using our automated phone service ? 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Alternatively, you may wish to visit a Post Office® branch that deals with vehicle tax.

Thank you MrCheerful

In practice you can register and tax any car without having any paperwork. Think they may then write to the last registered keeper to make sure it's OK. If they don't get told it's been stolen or scrapped etc, you'll be ok. Think the idea is not many thieves will register the car in their name and pay the VED. ;-)

Thanks, I just went on to the DVLA site and tax'd the car using the 12 digit reference number on the V5C/2 - worked fine.

Hold on one minute...

I thought you said you had the V5C and BCA had kept the tear-off bit? From that, I took it to mean you had the main V5C (which is the bit BCA should have sent in) and they'd retained the V5C/2 new keeper slip for reasons best known to them.

If you've taxed it on the old V5C, then you're going to get a refund less a month when you send it in to get a V5C in your own name.

If you've taxed it on the V5C/2 doc ref, then... I guess BCA didn't keep that...?

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sorry, what I described is incorrect. BCA kept the front page of the V5C and notified DVLA of new keeper. I tax'd the vehicle using the reference number on the new keeper supplement V5C/2.

Ah. Right. So just the same as buying any used car from anywhere since the change from V5 to V5C at least a decade and a half ago...
