Ahh well yes, but had you read the newsgroups alittle whilst in the market for a Focus, you would know very well not to have left the dealer with only one key. (especially on a Ford)

The key doesn't have remote self locking, which apparently makes a replacement a bit cheaper. I have the key numbers in the vehicle documentation stuff which came with the car. Question, how do I go about getting a spare key, and how much is it liable to cost?... TIA

Buying the new key is the easy/cheap bit. You do however need *two* keys that are already programmed to the car in order to program a third. Without two working keys in your possesion you are at the mercy of a dealer I'm afraid.

The handbook should have all this information.

The remote key is around 65quid plus cutting plus programming (if you dont already have 2 working keys) from Ford.

A standard key from a lock smith is about 15quid. You will however need to visit the dealer who could charge upto 50quid or so to reset the ECU and relearn the two keys you now have. This is only possible via the diagnostic connector.

As long as you have two keys, you may programme yourself a further 4. (having had them cut to fit the locks -either from the key code you have, or copying another)

I'm collecting it Saturday. Will 3 average blokes be able to lift it into the back of a small hatchback, or is that practically impossible? I have a mate with a transportable engine hoist but it will be hassle to get that.

Also mine has air con, but I dont know if the new one has. If it doesn't, how much trouble might that cause? The power steering pump is top left (looking at the cam end) and the air con pump bottom right.

The new one has air con, so no problem.

If the (2 years younger?) engine turns out to be a good 'un, then 250 quid is probably cheaper than a main dealer might have charged for just replacing the the belt and associated components on the original. And as others have already pointed out it should now be a fairly straightforward job to do that with the engine out of the car.

But as someone said earlier in the thread... It's important to know about cars, but the most important thing to know is your limit... (but until you find your limit, how do you know where it is?

You might as well take the head off the old one & see how damaged it is. If it's minor then stick it on ebay.

Good idea What else is worth keeping/selling from the old engine? How much is the head likely to be worth?

The only real answer to that is what somebodys prepared to pay. If it's not buggered you should get £150 for the whole lot, assuming anyone near you wants one.

You are probably aware of this, but just incase you're not-

DO NOT slacken the refrigerant hoses at the a/c compressor to facilitate removing the old / refitting the new engine, otherwise you will have to add

Also suspend the compressor via some cable ties / rope etc- dont let it hang on the soft aluminium pipes.
