Toyota Avensis - Central Locking

Hi Group,

I have a 1998 Toyota Avensis, and the central locking has just packed in. The key remote still operates the alarm, but not the locks. Also, the lock switch in the driver door won't operate the locks. This leads me to believe it's something to do with the locking circuit itself.

Checked the fuse referred to in the handbook and that's fine. So now I'm thinking it's the relay, or the drive circuitry. However, there is no Haynes manual available for this car yet, so I haven't a clue where to find these things.

Please can someone advise me where to find the drive relay, and anything else that may be worth checking (control unit etc)

Many thanks for reading.

I'd check the wires between the doors and the body, in area by the hinges. These tend to be the weak area, they break due to all the "flexing" as the doors are opened and closed.

Sometimes you see a pattern- doors will lock but not unlock, the wire that carries the unlock pulse is broken. Vice Versa in the case of unlocking. If neither work, the earth wire is the problem.

If you find a break, you need to splice in a new section of wire- with joins in an area that doesn't flex. A joint in the section that flexes will fail very quickly. If you can, try to get some "extra flex" from somewhere like Maplin.

Thanks for the input Brian, just so I'm clear, if a broken wire is present in *any* door, none of the door locks will operate? Or is it likely to be the driver door which has the broken wire? (I guess this makes more sense as it will see the most "flexing"). Also, as there is no response either way (open or close), it seems most likely to be the earth then, yes?

Anyway, thanks again, I'll get my fluke out and start belling around.

Most systems have a control unit which converts the switch output into a pulse just long enough to operate the motors, and that's the likely culprit. If you went to a dealer and checked up on the price of a spare, their parts list might identify where it is.

Depends, if there is some sort of "master control" (eg an override) in the driver's door, then it would seem likely. I can't be sure, I've never owned a Toyota. However, in my experience, the weak area in such things is the wiring.

In general, that is what I'd expect.
