I have just bought this car for summer fun and have to say i'm not having much fun ....yet! ha, other than i love confusing problems and i certainly have one! This car seems to be consuming lots and lots of fuel but it was working...last week it broke down after making some loud bangs out of the exhaust.....now i'm lucky if i can get it running and and sitting for a while before it coughs and splutter and then conks out. Any ideas? I'm thinking carburettor???? Also, does anyone know where you can get a hood handle for one of these? Many thanks, Emma x

Thus spake bluesofty (e_j snipped-for-privacy@hotmail.com) unto the assembled multitudes:
Your distributor might be shagged. I had a Mk2 and one day the distributor bearing seized, but the shaft just turned the whole bearing around instead. Amazingly the car kept going, but very roughly. Take off the distributor cap and look for metal swarf inside - sure sign of buggered bearing.
