Volvo 2.5D SE S80 Diesel

Jun 20, 2006 9 Replies

Hi, This is not really a maintenance question, however I have seen a W reg. S80 with 120K on it. I don't know much about these cars, googling seems to indicate it has a Audi 5 cylinder engine. Is this turbo charged ? I am considering a luxury car for my motorway commute but I'm too stingy to get a BMW or anything too new. Is this S80 a good bet at about 4000-4500 quid ? Any info on them apreciated :)

I could be wrong but don't think this has Audi engine - it is I believe a Volvo design that was initially underpowered. More recent engines are more powerful seem to recall that early XC90 fitted with this engine were very sluggish

2.5D is the audi engine, chips to about 170bhp. Reliable and good at motorway speeds. Auto boxes need a fluid change at 100k even though the schedule says not needed. S80s get niggly suspension noises - specialists sort them better than dealers. Very comfortable and quick point to point. Factory stereo and seats as good as they get.

..except for the diesel injectors.

cheers, I've arranged for another look at the car, Is it 'better' than a diesel Mondeo at the same price ( =A34.5k) would you say ?

if it drives at all it must be better than any mondeo

specialists

Ah.... 2.5 diesel rather than D5

I would say so but then I've owned two Volvos. The Mondeo will be cheaper to own but not nearly as pleasant to be in.

hi again, I went to have another look and I've found that the service is over due by several thousand miles. Also the power steeing fluid was low ( off the dipstick ) and there is *thick* black smoke on hard acceleration. Should any of these things put me off ? It drives ok, the seats are lovely and the air con. works ok.. could not spot much else obviously wrong. I'm really tempted ;-) but I know there are some experienced mechanics etc. reading this forum, any info apreciated !

ps. what does the red triangle with exclaimation mark meen , this seems to be on permanently and the owner was a bit clueless about what it meant, there is a failed bulb in the front fog light, is this it ?
